Translate’s new Practice feature adds gamified voice drills, signaling shift toward interactive language learning.
Google Translate is reportedly moving towards combining gamification elements into its language learning features, potentially changing from a simple translation tool into a complete language learning platform. This shift is largely shown by the development of a new feature called Practice which is currently being tested in the app.
Gamification, the use of game mechanics in non-game contexts is a key part of popular language learning apps like Duolingo which motivates users to keep learning through its rewards, challenges and progress tracking.
Google Translate appears to be adopting similar strategies to make learning more engaging. This feature will likely use voice recognition and progress tracking, allowing users to see their improvement over time, akin to the gamified models used by other language apps.
In order to track progress, users will need to sign in and grant microphone permissions. The Practice function will be accessible through a dedicated icon on the main Google Translate page. When it is fully operational, users will be able to track their progress in a game-like setting while practicing translations via voice answers. This includes a possible Practice Mode for several language pairs, such English and Spanish which is intended to reward users for doing tasks and promote continued involvement.
The transition to more interactive, user-centered learning experiences is reflected in Google Translate's foray into gamified language learning. This shift is indicative of larger patterns in education where game mechanics increase motivation and involvement. If Google Translate is effective it might pose a significant threat to well-known companies like Duolingo by providing a strong, AI-powered solution for working together, enjoyable language learning.
