The 2nd Nigeria Spokespersons Summit highlighted the importance of ethical communication in enhancing democracy and public trust.
The urgent need for ethical leadership communication was the main agenda of the 2nd Nigeria Spokespersons Summit held in Abuja on April 17, 2025. The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation organized the summit, inviting communications professionals from all spheres to share ideas on the importance of public relations in consolidating Nigeria's democracy.
Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, stated in his keynote address that Nigeria must ensure leadership and policy communication reflect the maturity and integrity of its political system. He cautioned that misinformation and unprofessional communication habits are serious challenges to democratic values. "When communication is grounded in integrity, citizens can make informed choices and hold leaders accountable," Abbas emphasized.
The highlight of the year was the 2025 National Spokespersons Awards, where Julius Berger Nigeria Plc emerged with the award as the "Most Influential Corporate Voice" in Nigeria. The title was awarded in appreciation of the company's constant and effective implementation of public relations practices to influence the public and stakeholders. Segun McMedal, the Chairman of the Planning Committee of the Awards, stated the critical assessment criteria of clarity, consistency, media adaptability, and measurable PR effects.
Furthermore, Emmanuel Isibor, Julius Berger Media Relations Manager, was awarded the "Outstanding Spokesperson, Crisis Management (Private Sector)" to highlight the need for effective communication in times of crisis.
NIPR President, Dr. Ike Neliaku, characterized the summit as an essential component of a national communication policy designed to empower spokespersons and reinvigorate public confidence. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, praised the NIPR for professionalism and commitment towards enhancing the standards of communication in Nigeria.
The summit reaffirmed the public relations strategic function of pursuing democratic growth, crisis management, and growth in society.
