Automotive cybersecurity is becoming a crucial safety feature, with manufacturers adopting advanced technologies to protect vehicles.
As vehicles get more connected and software-based, automotive cybersecurity is now a significant element of motor vehicle safety. Analysts predict that vehicles will become part of the regular safety features very soon, akin to airbags and traction control that are regulated now.
With increasing cybersecurity threats like vehicle network hacking, GPS spoofing, and remote hacking of vital systems like steering and braking, manufacturers of cars are increasing their efforts towards shielding vehicles from possible cyberattacks. Players in the industry, including mobility platforms and cybersecurity companies, are working actively on solutions to counter these threats. Others are already directing next-generation technologies such as Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) and Vehicle Security Operations Centers (VSOCs) to protect the vehicles of the future.
Vikas Chaudhary, the founder of cybersecurity company HackersEra, stressed that digital safety solutions will become as common as airbags in cars. He pointed out that technologies such as IDPS and VSOCs, which track vehicle fleets in real-time for threats, will not only prevent cyberattacks but also become major differentiators for customers when selecting a car.
Automakers like Tata Motors are deploying robust cybersecurity solutions, including multi-layered defense approaches for vehicles, apps, and cloud infrastructure. These initiatives will help safeguard safety-critical systems, detect threats in a timely manner, and facilitate quick response to incidents. Penetration testing on a regular basis and continuous monitoring are also essential to detecting and remediating of vulnerabilities.
With international cybersecurity requirements such as ISO 21434 and India's soon-to-emerge AIS 189 regulations, car cybersecurity will not only become a best practice but also a mandated requirement. And as the times change, the question consumers soon will be wondering is not "how fuel efficient is the automobile?" but rather "how safe is the car?"
