Inaugural Walker’s Cay Wahoo Classic Fishing Tournament Ends with Emotional Victory

The Sunset Crew’s heartwarming journey brings a fairytale finish to the first tournament.

The inaugural Walker’s Cay Wahoo Classic in the Bahamas delivered an unforgettable and storybook ending, as the smallest boat in the fleet, the Sunset Crew, captured the largest fish of the tournament. This historic event, held at Walker’s Cay, was filled with excitement, drama, and a fair share of emotions.

Although the tournament’s prize money wasn’t as large as that of the upcoming Walker’s Cay Blue Marlin Invitational, it brought its own unique charm. A few boats stood out, but the real focus shifted to the Sunset Crew, who made the tournament their own with a truly heartwarming story.

Parker Ford, a 17-year-old angler aboard the Sunset Crew, had just been diagnosed with cancer relapse days before the tournament. Despite starting chemotherapy treatments, he was determined to participate. Just minutes after the competition began, Parker’s team hooked a monster fish. While they considered returning to the dock early to weigh in, they decided to continue fishing, hoping to catch even more. As they ventured farther out, their boat eventually ran out of fuel due to a faulty gauge, leaving them stranded a mere three miles from the dock.

The rest of the fleet rallied behind them, towing them back just minutes before the time limit expired. In an emotional moment, the Sunset Crew made it back in time to weigh their fish, which secured them the biggest catch of the tournament.

Seeing Sunset Crew on the check and experiencing that moment with my brother and friends was surreal. It just went full circle.” said Tate Ford of the mighty Sunset Crew.

The tournament ended with a celebration of both the big catches and the spirit of competition, with Moonshine winning the Wahoo aggregate, Fish N Pol taking home the largest Mahi prize, and Fighting Forth securing the largest tuna. With nearly 40 boats registering and 25 competing, the first edition of the Walker’s Cay Wahoo Classic is already poised for growth next year.
