TRAI plans a new consultation on telemarketer rules, aims to reduce spam, verify consents and enhance IT.
Anil Kumar Lahoti, the chairman of TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) stated that a new consultation on an authorization framework for telemarketers and stricter rules to prevent spam are anticipated shortly.
Customers will be able to opt out and current permissions will be verified as part of this project, which aims to expedite the validation process. Additionally, TRAI has stated that it will not be reexamining its recent rule mandating that service providers supply distinct special tariff vouchers (STV) for SMS and voice calls.
Additionally, TRAI is getting ready to modernize its IT infrastructure, which it hopes will result in telecom companies and other sector participants reporting more effectively. The consultant Deloitte is almost finished with its report on the system redesign. To resolve this problem, TRAI intends to work with interested parties to provide a system that permits seamless onboarding and confirmation of prior consents without interfering with service. The goal, according to Lahoti, is to make sure that consents that have already been acquired on paper are accurately documented on the DLT platform and provide customers the choice to opt out if they no longer want to receive communications.
In order to fight spam, TRAI is also expected to implement more severe rules in the upcoming month. Among other things, an August discussion paper suggested raising the rates for calls and SMS messages over a specific amount. In order to detect possible spammers, the study recommended closely examining customers who send more than 50 SMS messages or make more than 50 calls each day in addition to other criteria.
Lahoti reiterated that TRAI must strike a balance between the interests of telecom providers and consumers in response to industry opposition to voice-only STVs. Although the regulation permits telecom companies to advertise data services, it encourages people to purchase data.
