Tencent unveils Hunyuan T1, an advanced AI reasoning model, to compete in China’s AI market.
Tencent Holdings Ltd. unveiled a new version of its AI reasoning model, Hunyuan T1, a major step in China's competitive AI market. Shenzhen-based technology giant Tencent released T1 as part of its consistent attempts to lead in AI, a sector that's changing the world tech industry. The model was first launched in Tencent's chatbot application, Yuanbao, and has since been compared to other advanced models such as DeepSeek's R1, which shook Silicon Valley by providing best-in-class AI performance at a fraction of the price and computational power.
Tencent engineers presented the advanced features of T1 in a live-streamed session, where it was demonstrated that the model had better logic and writing abilities with fewer hallucinations or mistakes. They claimed that T1’s performance is on par with some of the industry’s best, including R1 and OpenAI’s o1 model, citing key benchmarks. The release of T1 is part of Tencent’s broader strategy to stay competitive alongside other Chinese tech giants like Baidu and Alibaba, which are also doubling down on AI development.
Baidu recently launched its own reasoning model, which it says is as good as R1 but half the price, while Alibaba has made a name for its open-source Qwen models and a partnership with Apple to integrate AI into iPhones in China. Tencent's strategy is a combination of its own models such as Hunyuan and open-sourced ones, similar to how it releases both its own and third-party games.
Tencent also keeps pushing the boundaries, having recently released five AI models that can convert text or images into 3D visuals, making the game development process easier. Tencent showed T1's faster decoding speed in a live demo, with T1 solving complicated math equations twice as quickly as similar models. Tencent is also going to open-source one of its mid-scale models, making AI more versatile and accessible across industries.
