Google Faces Employee Discontent Over Smaller Pay Increases Despite Strong Financial Results

Employees voice concerns over pay disparity as Google posts impressive financial performance.

Despite posting a robust financial performance in 2025, Google is facing growing dissatisfaction from its employees over smaller pay increases. During a recent all-hands TGIF meeting, many staff members raised concerns about reduced compensation packages, particularly regarding smaller stock grants and lower salary hikes, despite the company’s strong earnings.

John Casey, Google’s Vice President of Global Compensation and Benefits, addressed the issue by confirming that over 80% of employees did receive pay increases this year. However, Casey acknowledged that the equity grants and overall compensation for some employees were smaller than in previous years, sparking questions about fairness. He explained that employees in non-technical roles or in specific regions were most affected, citing the company’s efforts to align compensation with local market conditions and the ongoing adjustments to Google’s pay structure.

Google’s compensation packages typically include a combination of base salary, stock grants, and performance bonuses, which are largely based on individual impact and performance. Casey emphasized that the company’s model is designed to reward those who drive significant value for the business, but the disparity in pay increases has raised concerns among employees who feel their contributions are not adequately reflected in their compensation.

This is not the first time Google has faced employee backlash over compensation. Similar concerns arose during the 2024 pay cycle, with some workers expressing dissatisfaction that their pay growth did not match their contributions to the company’s success.

In addition to compensation adjustments, Google also introduced a voluntary exit program in 2024 for employees in the Platforms & Devices division, following the merger of the Pixel hardware and Android software teams. The program offered severance packages for those choosing to leave the company.
