Citroen is focusing on affordable, iconic electric cars, including a possible revival of the 2CV and a production version of the innovative Oli concept.
Citroen is shaking the electric car market, with CEO Thierry Koskas affirming that the brand aims to make iconic, affordable models, including a possible return of the iconic 2CV. While he insisted that Citroen is not interested in nostalgia-inspired design, he admitted that classic cars are desired as aspirational "halo cars." These cars would not be volume bestsellers but would create an image for the brand. Among the options is a production version of the Citroen Oli concept car, an all-electric pickup that caused a stir when it was unveiled back in 2022. Koskas signaled that the Oli, with its innovative touches such as light materials and unique seats, could find its way into future Citroen products.
In addition, Citroen is developing a cheaper version of its popular e-C3 supermini, aiming for an entry price below €20,000. The new car will have a 130-mile range, making it a convenient choice for urban drivers who require an electric vehicle without the high cost. Koskas clarified that smaller electric vehicles are hard to make profitably, but the new e-C3's smaller battery capacity and lower cost should make it an appealing option for city dwellers.
Citroen's strategy is part of a broader movement for car manufacturers to focus on affordable, small-sized electric cars that bring both sustainability and design appeal. As manufacturers such as Volkswagen boost their efforts to make affordable electric cars, Citroen's combination of retro styles and innovative electric designs provides the firm with a unique niche in the market. Whether it is the promise of a reincarnation of the 2CV or the innovative spirit of the Oli, Citroen clearly is committed to producing cars that are both stylish and practical for the modern era.
