Apptronik raised $350M to enhance and scale production of AI-powered Apollo humanoid robots.
Apptronik, a robotics development firm based in Texas that was established in 2016 has raised $28 million so far and is in the process of deploying Apollo, a "groundbreaking" humanoid robot intended for industrial tasks. The business, which is based in Texas, has 170 employees now and plans to boost that by over 50%.
To scale up production of its AI-humanoid robots, robot firm Apptronik announced it has raised $350 million in a Series fundraising round. The investments, as per Apptronik, would assist the firm's humanoid robot, Apollo, to get better. This involves developing new designs, iterating rapidly, and adding capabilities to tackle a variety of manufacturing, logistics, and medical uses.
The company also added that the funds will allow it to increase production to meet orders from a range of industries, including consumer packaged goods, automotive, beverage fulfillment and bottling, electronics manufacturing, and third-party logistics companies.
The most recent funding round comes after three years of expansion, during which time the company has partnered with Google DeepMind's robotics team, NASA, NVIDIA, and entered into commercial agreements with GXO Logistics and Mercedes-Benz.
The 5-foot-8-inch, 160-pound Apollo can carry 55 pounds of cargo and has a four-hour runtime between charges. The humanoid robot was created by Apptronik to address the labor crisis by assisting people and doing physically taxing jobs. The company claims that Apollo might prevent work-related injuries, increase efficiency, and lower turnover.
Google CEO Jeff Cardenas stated that robots, powered by AI, are becoming increasingly versatile. He explained that these robots are now being introduced on a larger scale, expanding from industrial uses to potentially entering homes in the future.
