Pune's Comprehensive Mobility Plan outlines a 30-year vision to expand metro, BRT, and public transport infrastructure.
The Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the rest of the district was presented at a District Planning Committee meeting on Thursday. The massive transformation in public transport envisioned during the next 30 years would span an area of 20,550 square meters by including a 276-km network with six new BRT corridors aimed at overall mobility infrastructure in the city.
The plan will be executed in three phases with an estimated cost of ₹1,26,489 crore, involving multiple government agencies. Among the proposed metro routes, two key projects — Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi — have already been sent to the central government for approval. 148 km of metro road is proposed for the expansion of metro with critical routes like District Court to Yevlewadi and Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor. This will also include 128 km of metro corridor covering District Court to Alandi and Wakad Chowk to Shewalewadi.
Additionally, a HCMTR shall be developed in the PMC as well as the PCMC area that would effectively link the PMC and PCMC areas. Here, the plan is to have a better exploitation of public transportation; the present PMPML serves only 10% population while it's planning to lift it up to 60% of the daily commuting population. The plan will increase the number of buses from the existing fleet to 11,564, including 1,625 electric buses, by 2054. Besides, 641 km of new bus routes and the establishment of 10 new bus terminals are also planned.
This holistic vision, therefore, hopes to decongest traffic; encourage electric vehicles; and more importantly, create a much-efficient and sustainable transport system for both Pune and the periphery around it. Projected works that are envisioned from this plan aim to change the transportation landscape and ensure long-term improvements in the accessibility, sustainability of the environment, and convenient commuting for locals.
