Citrix users with version 2411 face compatibility issues with Microsoft's January 2025 Patch Tuesday update, but a workaround is available.
Citrix users with version 2411 of the Session Recording Agent are experiencing compatibility issues with Microsoft's January 2025 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The update fails to install properly on devices with Citrix's software installed, even though the update downloads and attempts to apply. Users then see a message that reads, "Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes."
This installation failure was confirmed by Microsoft as due to certain Citrix components, especially the 2411 version of the Session Recording Agent. Here, the problem arises due to the inability of the update to correctly update specific driver files when this version is active in the system. As per Microsoft, this happens only when the 2411 version of the Session Recording Agent is enabled and not in all previous versions of Citrix software.
Citrix is aware of the problem and is working on the cause so that it can develop a fix. The company has assured users that home users are not expected to be affected, and not all organizations will experience the issue. Citrix has suggested a workaround for users to successfully install the January 2025 security update: temporarily stop the Citrix client and disable its startup. After closing the Citrix software, users can then install the update and reopen Citrix once the update process is complete.
Citrix has also provided instructions to bypass the problem using Powershell or Command Prompt for more technical users. While the problem persists without a permanent update for version 2411, the bypass is simple, and users are able to get the latest security patches installed with little delay.
Users of Citrix are further advised to stay alert for upcoming updates and deploy them immediately, so their system remains safe and updated.
