Tom Cruise, Civilian Award, Navy

Tom Cruise receives the US Navy's Distinguished Public Service Award for promoting military through his films.

Tom Cruise was awarded the US Navy's highest civilian award, the Distinguished Public Service Award, for his excellent contributions to the military through his film roles. The award was presented to the 62-year-old actor on Tuesday at Longcross Film Studios in Chertsey, Surrey.

Cruise's iconic portrayal of the Navy fighter pilot Maverick in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun played a key role in boosting military enlistment, making him a symbol of military support. The film's immense success, which highlighted Cold War-era aviation, had a profound impact on the public perception of the military. In fact, the Navy set up recruitment tables in theaters to capitalize on the surge of interest.

Cruise continued to advocate for the military in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which reinvigorated the enthusiasm of younger audiences toward the Navy. The Navy credited Cruise for raising public awareness of the sacrifices servicemen and women make to a significantly higher level. At the award ceremony, Cruise expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the service of military personnel, and spoke about his deep belief that "to lead is to serve." He emphasized his admiration for the military, which he has supported unwaveringly for nearly four decades.

US Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, said in his tribute to Cruise that the actor had continued to make great efforts to support the Navy and Marine Corps. Along with Top Gun, Cruise was honored for his performances in Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, and the Mission: Impossible series, which all featured military themes.

The Distinguished Public Service Award is an honor that has previously been bestowed on such celebrities as Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks for their work on Saving Private Ryan. Cruise, who is currently filming Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning in Surrey, joins a distinguished group of recipients with this recognition.
