Elon Musk Teases Xmail, Sparking Debate Over Its Potential to Rival Gmail

Elon Musk's tease about Xmail as a potential rival to Gmail sparks online debate, blending intrigue with skepticism.

Elon Musk has sent the internet into frenzy once again over his latest post about developing a possible new email service. Xmail, which apparently he first teased in February during a talk on the prospects of an email service that possibly challenged Google's dominant Gmail services with over 1.8 billion users.

The conversation reignited when X security engineer Nate McGrady asked Musk, "When we making XMail?" Musk responded simply with, "It's coming." Musk's cryptic reply quickly gained traction on the platform, making Xmail the second most discussed topic on X, with over 22,600 posts in response.

Adding fuel to the fire, Musk said, "Interesting," followed by, "We need to rethink how messaging, including email, works overall," which appeared to reference a more overarching vision for email and messaging services. His tweet, posted at 12:46 PM Sunday, was viewed 16.9 million times, further fueling the speculation over Xmail.

While some appreciated the concept of an email that would be an @x.com, many reacted otherwise. Online responses began ranging from memes making fun of their decision to switch away from Gmail to Xmail up to skeptical comments within Reddits questioning their decision to trust Musk regarding all their data. A Redditor, for instance, wrote: "Ha, and I mean, ha, this as much as I can stress."

Gmail continues dominating the email market, having 30.7% of it, followed by a great distance from Apple Mail at 53.67%. Others such as Outlook and Yahoo! Mail occupy much lesser percentages, raising many doubts as to whether Xmail could indeed stand alongside the mentioned giants.
