Democrat Adam Gray narrowly defeats Republican Rep. John Duarte in California's 13th Congressional District

Democrat Adam Gray won a tight race in California's 13th Congressional District on December 2, 2024, defeating the Republican incumbent Rep. John Duarte. The victory was the last congressional seat decided in the 2024 election cycle, with Gray leading by just 187 votes when Duarte conceded later that evening.

The race had been one of the closest in the country. Gray had trailed Duarte for the first three weeks of vote counting. As mail-in ballots were tallied, though, Gray eventually took the lead, and by November 26, he was ahead. Gray said he thanks voters, volunteers, donors, and campaign staff, saying that he "views himself as responsible to always providing independent and accountable leadership" and will work to prioritize the needs of the district's residents.

In his concession, Duarte said he had won the district in 2022 by a hair and had always said that he would do this again when he would returned to public service. Although Gray won, Republicans are still going to maintain their slimmest majority ever in the U.S. House of Representatives, as they keep 220 seats while Democrats have 215.

The 13th Congressional District in California comprises parts of the counties of Merced, Fresno, Madera, San Joaquin, and Stanislaus, an overall swing district. Although it is dominated by a small majority of registered Democrats by percentage-42 percent of the total, it would tend to be more middling with conservative-leaning democrats sometimes voting for republican candidates. Apart from Gray's election, democrats will also take control of other localities throughout the state of California, Orange County and up into northern Los Angeles County.

Gray and Duarte have campaigned on different issues. The former has run on decreasing gas prices and lowering the cost of living, while Gray ran on his experience to work across party lines and improve infrastructure, education, and job opportunities.
