Apple releases iOS 18.2 with critical security patches, new Apple Intelligence features, and ends support for iOS 17 on compatible devices.

Apple has released iOS 18.2, which brings significant updates, new Apple Intelligence features, and 21 essential security patches for iPhones. For most iPhone users, iOS 18.2 is a good enough reason to upgrade to iOS 18. The release includes critical security fixes, particularly for the iPhone Kernel and WebKit—the engine that powers the Safari browser—addressing vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to execute malicious code on your device. With these patches, the company is advising users to install the update in order to save their iPhones from future vulnerabilities.

Along with the iOS 18.2 update, Apple has also released iOS 17.7.3 for the older devices. This version includes patches of 14 security vulnerabilities, but this update is available only for a limited list of older devices like the iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, and iPad 6th generation. This marks a new shift in the strategy of Apple: devices supporting iOS 18 are not allowed to stay on iOS 17. These devices will be left open to various security risks if they are to stay on iOS 17, hence the need for upgrading to iOS 18.

The release of iOS 18.2 also ends the option to stay on iOS 17 for devices that qualify for iOS 18, indicating Apple's continued commitment to upgrading its ecosystem to meet the highest standards of security and user experience. As such, this update represents not only an important security improvement but also the introduction of innovative features powered by Apple Intelligence.

Given this, iPhone users need to immediately update their system to iOS 18.2 to safeguard their data and enjoy new features. Apple's mobile operating system continues to evolve, and staying up to date ensures that one is in line with the latest features and capabilities and guards against vulnerabilities.
