AI continues to produce more low-quality content on the internet than ever before through generative AI tools like Google's Veo and OpenAI's Sora. There is now a large-scale effort underway to find ways to eliminate what people are calling "AI Slop." Generative AI tools are now so easily accessible that just a few words can create incredibly lifelike imagery in just seconds that has resulted in thousands of bizarre and unoriginal images of everything from cats painting to celebrities in compromising or illegal situations.

YouTube's CEO, Neal Mohan, has expressed his concern about the continued increase in low-quality content produced by AI. In a recent interview with Reddit users Mohan said that he views this content as "cheap, bland, and manufactured on a mass scale." Many users on social media agree with him when it comes to this brand of entertainment.

Amidst the discussion, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella has expressed a desire to transition from debating if AI creations are slop to how the technology can improve creativity and productivity. Bob Doyle, a YouTube creator that makes AI media, contends that anyone criticizing AI for being “slop” is fundamentally criticizing the artist’s personal expression through creativity. “You may think it is not valuable,” he expressed, “But to them it's the beginning of an idea, a seed.”

Pinterest and TikTok both have started to build filters separating synthetic and non-synthetic images to respond to consumers who want fewer synthetic images. Coda Music designates artists using AI as “AI artists” for clarity, allowing users to avoid AI-created music. Likewise, Cara, an artistic social networking site, utilizes both algorithmic and human moderation to filter synthetic art. The founder of Cara, Jingna Zhang, stated that the community wants to engage with human artists, and this highlights the ongoing conflict between artists and AI technology that creates content.
