Clemson University introduces new BYOD policy to enhance data security for faculty, staff, and students.
Clemson University adopted a new Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy intended to better protect its data in the face of growing global cyber-security threats. Approved on September 25, 2024, the policy intends to secure information systems, yet make it easier to access university resources using personal devices for faculty, staff, and students.
For most users, the BYOD policy will not change much about their daily use of Clemson resources. However, for those accessing university IT systems using personal devices such as laptops, desktops, or mobile phones either on campus or off campus, there are new security measures that will be taken. These are implemented to ensure that the policy is followed and Clemson's data remains intact.
The BYOD policy stipulates that the personal devices must meet certain security standards before access to university resources is granted. According to the university, the personal devices cannot carry classified or protected information, and downloading such information on the devices may result in breaking the law. In contrast, the BYOD policy allows users to feel safe that the Clemson will not read anything contained on their personal devices. The devices will be verified through a check of their settings for compliance with security. Access will be denied to any device that fails the security check.
To comply with this policy, personal devices need to meet the minimum operating system requirements, must have passcodes or passwords for lockout, and support two-factor authentication. Further, the policy reminds the user that the purpose of a personal device is for viewing Clemson business data but never to download it or store it.
