Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi will lead the U.S. Department of Justice under Trump’s administration.
President-elect Donald Trump has named Pam Bondi, the former Attorney General of Florida, as his pick for U.S. Attorney General. Bondi, known for her extensive legal background and media presence, takes the place of former Representative Matt Gaetz, who withdrew from consideration after facing challenges with Senate approval.
Trump announced the decision in a post on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing Bondi’s qualifications and commitment to refocusing the Department of Justice on fighting crime. He praised her as “smart, tough, and an America First fighter” who will lead the department effectively. Trump’s endorsement of Bondi follows Gaetz’s abrupt withdrawal after concerns about his Senate confirmation, largely due to an ongoing ethics investigation.
Bondi has practiced law for over a decade, having served eight years as Florida's Attorney General. Her work in high-profile cases has captured national attention; she was a primary voice defending the state ban on same-sex marriages as well as opposing Obamacare. Likewise, her prominent media presence fueled recognition also during the 2016 presidential campaign where she served as a surrogate for Trump.
While her past endeavors to become confirmed for more senior roles are complicated by controversy surrounding a political contribution from Trump's foundation, Bondi still would be considered an insider within the orbit of Trump. Aside from her career as an attorney, Bondi has served as an attorney advisor at the White House and engaged in pro-Trump activities, including fighting the "weaponization" of the DOJ.
Bondi’s nomination will now await Senate approval, but insiders predict a smoother confirmation process compared to Gaetz, owing to her established relationships in Washington, D.C.
