City of Chandler partners with TranslateLive to deploy real-time language translation tools for better public interaction.

The City of Chandler, Arizona, has taken a significant step toward improving communication accessibility by approving a one-year contract with TranslateLive, LLC, for advanced multi-language translation technology. This agreement will provide real-time translation services in over 200 languages and dialects, both in-person and remotely, offering vital support to Chandler's diverse population.

Under the new contract, 20 desktop translation devices will be installed in high-traffic municipal locations, including the City Clerk’s Office, Chandler Municipal Court, Municipal Utilities, Libraries, and Police Records. In addition, five portable devices will be deployed for field use, enabling city staff to assist residents directly in various community settings.

This initiative follows a successful six-month pilot program launched in September 2023, where translation devices were tested across 10 city departments. During the pilot, over 560 interactions were recorded, with Spanish being the most frequently spoken language. The devices also supported talk-to-text functions, providing a valuable resource for residents with hearing disabilities. This technology is designed to ensure that language and accessibility barriers do not hinder communication with city services.

The total cost of the contract is capped at $85,000, covering the devices, accessories, and necessary services. The city has the option to extend the contract for up to four additional years. This project is a collaboration between the Chandler Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division and the Information Technology Department, underscoring the city's commitment to enhancing inclusivity.

Chandler plans to continue promoting this service to ensure even greater accessibility for residents. The integration of real-time translation technology highlights how advanced translation software is transforming customer service and public engagement.
