AFP intensifies investigation into PwC’s involvement in government tax breach amid ongoing accountability efforts.
The Australian Federal Police further deepened its enquiry into the involvement of PwC in a tax breach from the government after conducting a raid on the headquarters of the firm located in Barangaroo, Sydney. “Operation Alesia” follows the ongoing investigation to assess whether former partners of PwC acted against the Crimes Act as they revealed official secrets. The AFP has been conducting the inquiry since May 2023 after the department was referred by Australia's Treasury.
PwC has assured that it will fully cooperate with authorities, with Chief Executive Kevin Burrowes confirming that the firm is facilitating the AFP's search of documents and computers. The probe is reportedly centered on four former PwC partners, and recent reports have surfaced indicating potential criminal conduct by individuals involved in the tax-related scandal.
The raid comes at the back of pressure mounting from lawmakers including Greens Senator Barbara Pocock who demanded transparency of the firm's internal practice. Fallout has been massive at PwC as it has lost a good number of its staff and partners, most being in public sector business. Scandal still trails PwC which says that the investigation involves only former employees since governance reforms meant to rebuild the firm continue to be affected.
The AFP is probably going to give the public updates on the results of Operation Alesia as the investigation unfolds.
