Minister Salako launches RVMs to promote recycling and reduce plastic pollution across Nigeria.
Nigeria has taken a significant step forward in waste management with the unveiling of Plastic Waste Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs). These advanced machines, launched by Dr. Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for Environment, aim to address plastic pollution and encourage recycling throughout the country.
Produced under the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Project "Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains through Circular Economy Practices," the RVMs are a significant innovation in waste management. Salako said the introduction of the machines marked Nigeria's commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
Reverse vending machines are new-generation solutions promoting proper waste management," Salako said. "Citizens deposit recyclable materials, such as plastic bottles, cans, and glass containers, for rewards in return. Such simple technology, however effective it may be, encourages recycling and a culture of environmental responsibility.
The RVMs support the main principles of the circular economy, being waste-reducing, recycling- promoting, and resourceful in understanding the patterns regarding waste disposal. Other than offering environmental benefits to society, economic benefits are drawn through job development and support in local industries for the machines' functioning.
Because such machines reverse a large amount of plastic waste headed into landfills or the pollution of oceans, it re-returns it to circulation. This does reduce the fresh requirement of newly produced resources for products and even reduces the impact on the ecosystems.
Salako also mentioned the local innovation aspect, saying that the machines were manufactured by a group of young Nigerians. "This marks the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria's waste management journey," he said, pointing out the nation's commitment to environmental sustainability and local craftsmanship.
