Red Hat partners with industry leaders to improve substation automation and utility management efficiency

Red Hat works together with industry leaders to address new challenges in substation automation and utility management for the power grid. Based on software-defined architectures, these changes support higher flexibility and scalability in real-time adaptability and cost savings by reducing hardware changes. This change would demand cooperation between the traditional suppliers and integrators for innovation in platform development.

With integrated IT-OT ecosystems, the adoption of utility infrastructures by the concept of software-defined infrastructures becomes much more feasible. Utilities can modernize infrastructure, improve operational efficiencies and responsiveness of their smart grid and virtualize applications while taking advantage of edge computing and AI advancements.

Two initiatives stand out that are indicative of Red Hat's commitment to the change. The first of these is its joining of the Virtual Protection Automation and Control (vPAC) Alliance, a group engaged in an effort to develop a standards-based, secure software-defined architecture for the power system substation. With over 30 founding members including Dell Technologies and Intel, vPAC expects to increase the reliability and cyber resiliency of grids while reducing the operational cost.

In addition, Red Hat has donated CentOS Stream 9 support to the SEAPATH project within LF Energy, hence bringing synergy among open-source grid projects. It aims to realize technology compatibility in a seamless manner across platforms.

Red Hat and its partners, such as Welotec, developed a reproducible hardware and software setup to meet latency requirements for the virtualization of protective relay functions in digital substations, where the energy sector continues to evolve with the integration of distributed renewable resources.
