Europe is at a Crossroads AI Development Must be Crucially Accelerated

Europe's AI future is at a crossroads, demanding urgent action to secure its place in the global landscape.

In the heart of Brussels, a quiet revolution is emerging as the EU must accelerate its artificial intelligence development. Otherwise, a trillions-dollar economic opportunity may land in the hands of the United States and China while Europe sits on the sidelines. But also, this diversity of workforce as well as historical tradition of ethical governance provides an extraordinary opportunity to set global standards for responsible AI.

Europe needs to create innovation zones with fewer red tapes and set a €100 billion public-private investment fund in place to overcome its fragmented digital landscape and realize its full AI potential. It needs to bridge the skills gap by integrating artificial intelligence in school curricula and accelerate visa programs to encourage specialists from all over the world.

More importantly, a €1 billion Grand Challenge for Ethical AI can stimulate ethical innovation, and the establishment of an European AI Ethics Board will enforce rules. The establishment of an AI Regulatory Sandbox and cross-border cooperation through a European AI Cloud with pooled resources will promote risk-free testing.

Decisions made in the following months will seal Europe's place in the actual global landscape of AI it stands at, and the continent can seize this chance to develop people-focused AI and shape a future that benefits every citizen through the fusion of innovation and ethics. Thus, it is now that decisive action to define Europe's future in the AI age will be put to stake.
