New Malware Targets Google Chrome Users, Stealing Passwords through Kiosk Mode

Hackers employ innovative tactics to capture user credentials, raising cybersecurity concerns.

Researchers at OALABS have discovered a new malware, dubbed StealC, that poses a significant threat to Google Chrome users. This malicious software employs a technique known as AutoIt Credential Flusher to lock victims out of their systems. By leveraging Chrome’s Kiosk Mode, which restricts access to a fullscreen interface, the malware forces users to enter their Google account credentials.

Victims find themselves unable to exit the locked screen, leading them to believe they must input their usernames and passwords to regain access. Once entered, this sensitive information is immediately captured and sent to the hackers behind StealC. Since last month, this concerning technique has been used, demonstrating the more clever strategies used by cybercriminals.

Users are advised to take precaution in order to counter this danger. Keyboard commands like Alt+F4, Ctrl + Shift + Esc, and opening the Task Manager can help users recover control of their computers if they find themselves stuck in Kiosk Mode. Adopting effective cyber security procedures, such as setting up two-factor authentication and creating unique passwords, can also help ward off such attacks.
