X Pauses EU Data Processing Training

The move is in response to recent lawsuits and a possible referral of the matter to the European Data Protection Board (EDPB)

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has agreed to halt the use of European users' posts for training its AI model, Grok, following intervention by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC). The decision was made in response to the DPC's concerns regarding X's adherence to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The DPC had sought an urgent court order against X for processing personal data without proper consent.

In a statement, the DPC confirmed that X would suspend the processing of data from public posts made by EU and EEA users between May 7, 2024, and August 1, 2024. This suspension is part of an ongoing review of whether X’s practices align with GDPR requirements. The move is in response to recent lawsuits and a possible referral of the matter to the European Data Protection Board. (EDPB). DPC commissioner Des Hogan emphasized the importance of protecting user rights under EU regulations. Risteard Byrne, assistant principal communications officer for the DPC, announced that the case will be reopened in court in September.

X responded by expressing its commitment to user privacy and its willingness to cooperate with the DPC. The company highlighted that EU users can manage their data settings and criticized the injunction as excessive and targeted. The legal and regulatory intervention highlights the changing landscape of AI and data privacy in the EU.
