Supa Team 4 showcases Zambian culture, with hopes for more African animation productions.
Netflix has officially launched its first African animation series, Supa Team 4, a groundbreaking production that marks a significant milestone for African entertainment. Set against a futuristic backdrop that is supposed to be the futuristic version of Zambia's capital Lusaka, the show entails the adventures of four young teenagers who get chosen by an erstwhile secret agent to save the world. Zambian scriptwriter Malenga Mulendema created this. He wishes more original productions emanate from African soil from an animated point of view.
The series emanated from a victory in 2015 with the Triggerfish Story Lab competition, a selection of talents specifically to nurture in Africa. In the pool of the eight winners announced, Mulendema's desire was to shoot the series out of Zambia: she would share Zambian culture with this story, believing it will tell something everyone across the globe would sympathize with and identify themselves for.
"I am so excited that the world will finally get to see the fantastic series that the very talented team, from Africa and beyond, has made," Mulendema said in an interview. According to her, the series will not only entertain viewers but also hopefully lead to increased investment and collaboration in Africa's animation industry.
Zambian rapper Sampa the Great, who worked on the theme tune for Supa Team 4, said she was excited about the show's cultural significance, especially for young Zambians. She said, "Knowing that young Zambians are going to be able to see something they've never seen on TV before is great."
Focus on Netflix producing a variety of content outside of the US. Success has culminated in other hits such as "La Casa de Papel" from Spain and "Squid Game" from South Korea. Today, Netflix puts more effort in to "Supa Team 4" in providing the world audience with more amplifications of voices and flavors of Africa.
