New Pilot Project Aims to Speed Up and Improve Medical Image Analysis

Red Hat, a global leader in open-source solutions, has partnered with Boston Children’s Hospital to revolutionize the field of radiology using artificial intelligence (AI). This exciting pilot project leverages Red Hat OpenShift to enhance how medical images are analyzed, potentially speeding up the process and increasing accuracy.

At Boston Children’s Hospital, known for its cutting-edge pediatric care, radiologists previously had to manually measure and analyze images, a process that was both slow and prone to errors. More complex image analyses were done offline, outside of the main clinical workflow, which added more time to the process. With Red Hat OpenShift and the ChRIS Research Integration Service—a web-based platform for medical imaging—the hospital is now piloting an AI-driven approach that could change this.

The AI system running on Red Hat OpenShift is designed to automatically scan x-rays, select the most crucial diagnostic images from thousands, and highlight any discrepancies. This not only speeds up the image interpretation process but also helps radiologists focus on the most critical aspects of the images.

Furthermore, innovations from this project can be shared on public research clouds like the Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC), allowing for large-scale data sharing and ongoing innovation. Boston Children’s Hospital hopes this initiative will enhance global healthcare solutions and improve patient outcomes worldwide.
