Waste Management opens a $30 million recycling facility in Fort Walton Beach to support sustainability and local economy.

Officially opened a new single-stream recycling facility in Fort Walton Beach, Florida: Waste Management opened its $30 million state-of-the-art single-stream recycling facility. It processes up to 76,000 tons of recyclable material yearly, and the regions served reach areas as far as Tallahassee, Biloxi, Mississippi, and Jackson, Mississippi. The materials serve the surrounding regions with most remaining in the same region.

Brent Bell, vice president of recycling for Waste Management, said most of the material processed at the facility would be used by local paper mills. The mills, which have switched from virgin wood to recycled content, need recycled cardboard boxes to make new products, further reducing the environmental impact of waste. "They actually need those cardboard boxes so they can turn them into new cardboard boxes," said Bell.

The facility is a significant investment in the local community, not only reducing waste and supporting sustainable practices but also providing jobs. Even though the plant has 44 job positions, so far, only 18 have been filled. Jeff Peters, city manager of Fort Walton Beach, said, "It's phenomenal for us as a department and as a city.

These new recycling facilities mark a great step forward in the endeavors of Waste Management to promote sustainability and reduce the quantities of waste that go to landfills. Processing locally and providing the mills with necessary resources, the plant is playing a significant role in supporting the regional circular economy.
