Elon Musk political donations failed to secure key Republican victories in 2026. Now, Tesla and SpaceX face fresh scrutiny as Democrats gain power.

Elon Musk's political donations of nearly $450 million to Republican candidates failed to deliver the expected results in the November 2026 US midterm elections. Democrats secured major victories, including key races in Texas, raising questions about the political influence of the world's richest person and the future of his business empire.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Musk backed Republican candidates across the country, with substantial spending directed towards Texas, where Tesla and SpaceX have major operations. Democrats Gina Hinojosa and James Talarico won their respective gubernatorial and Senate contests, defeating candidates supported by Musk.
Did nearly half a billion dollars fail to buy political influence?
Musk's spending produced limited electoral returns. Only three of the 43 Republican House candidates he supported won, while six of seven backed Senate candidates lost. His Texas political donations also failed to secure victories in several important contests.
The consequences could extend beyond politics. With Democrats gaining control of Congress, Musk's companies could face closer examination of government contracts, tax incentives, artificial intelligence projects and regulatory decisions.
CNN reported that Tesla and SpaceX could encounter increased scrutiny, particularly because of their substantial business interests in Texas. SpaceX's government contracts and Tesla's operations could become important subjects of congressional attention.
Could Musk's political strategy now become a business liability?
Investors have already reacted to the election outcome. According to Business Insider, Tesla and SpaceX shares declined by more than 3% on Wednesday, reducing Musk's estimated net worth by approximately $33 billion. Bloomberg placed his fortune at around $865 billion.
Musk responded to the Republican losses on X, writing, "Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time."
But is the bigger risk political scrutiny or investor confidence?
Business Honor observes that Musk's experience exposes a difficult contradiction in billionaire political influence. His financial resources remain enormous, but electoral spending cannot guarantee political support. For Tesla and SpaceX, the next challenge may be maintaining investor confidence and government relationships under a more questioning political leadership.
