The Kenya building collapse in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area has left several people missing as rescue teams search the rubble and officials investigate building safety violations.

The multilevel building that was under construction collapsed in the Eastleigh region of Nairobi city on Friday afternoon. The collapse resulted in several people going missing amid concerns over construction safety in Kenya and the need for stricter building safety regulations in Nairobi.
According to Al Jazeera, the collapse occurred at around 1pm local time on a busy commercial street. There were 67 workers in the building. One of them was injured, and the rest escaped unharmed.
The basement and ground floor were occupied by an electronics store, a butcher shop, and a grocery store. As reported by the Associated Press, about 11 people who were thought to have been trapped inside these shops were unaccounted for.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stated that although the building had construction permission, it lacked an occupation certificate.
“This has potentially cost lives,” Sakaja told reporters, according to Al Jazeera.
The Kenya Red Cross reported that two individuals who were injured had been pulled out of the rubble and taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, as stated by The Eastleigh Voice, a local news outlet. Rescue workers deployed machines such as excavators in their efforts to remove concrete and steel from the scene.
Also, there was a possibility of the neighbouring building collapsing since the collapsed building was leaning against it. The police started searching for the owner of the building.
The construction project had been registered by the National Construction Authority on July 30, 2025. It was unclear whether the building had undergone an inspection before the collapse.
This situation has once again raised concerns about building safety in Kenya. According to a report by AFP, the National Building Inspectorate found that 87 percent of buildings inspected in the country last year did not meet the required standards.
Rescue operations are continuing as efforts are made to determine the number of missing people and understand the cause of the accident. Business Honor observes that stronger building inspections and enforcement of occupancy rules are essential to protect workers, traders and residents.
