The biggest bank companies in the world by revenue keep getting bigger, and JPMorgan Chase shows how far that can go. The bank booked $185.6 billion in managed revenue in 2025 and $57 billion in profit. It was the eighth record year in a row, according to its filing with the SEC.
The whole industry is moving the same way. Fortune's 2026 Global 500, published on July 28, lists 123 financial firms. Together they brought in $9.7 trillion and made $1.12 trillion in profit. Both numbers are records. For investors and business owners, the list shows where money is piling up and where regulators will look next.
Why the rankings never match
Pick any two lists of the biggest banks worldwide and the order will differ. Each one measures something else. Fortune ranks by total revenue. Forbes mixes sales, profit, assets and market value. On the 2026 Forbes list, JPMorgan came first for the fourth year in a row, with $4.9 trillion in assets.
Revenue shows how busy a bank is. Market value shows how much investors trust it. In mid-August, JPMorgan was worth about $960 billion, according to Statista. Bank of America, in second place, was worth $447 billion. So which number tells you more?
The Top 10 Biggest Banks by Revenue in 2026
Here are the ten banks with the highest revenue in Fortune's 2026 data. Each figure is the bank's latest full-year revenue from its Fortune company profile. Fortune adds up everything a bank earns across the group. That is why its numbers run higher than the "managed" revenue banks report themselves, and why JPMorgan shows $280.4 billion here but $185.6 billion in its own results.

Two models show up here. The American banks earn from a wide mix of services. The Chinese state banks earn from sheer size at home, and recent coverage of the Global 500 pointed to thinner interest margins and slower revenue growth for them. A bank can get bigger and still drop in the ranking.
Where revenue swings: investment banking
Investment banking companies in the world rise and fall with deals. Forbes reports that investment banking fees hit $102.9 billion globally in 2025. Only 2021 was higher. Merger and acquisition value grew 36% over the year. JPMorgan alone collected $9.6 billion in those fees, and it led the $1.5 billion IPO of cloud provider CoreWeave.
The momentum carried into this year. GlobalData, writing for Retail Banker International, says global equity issuance passed $250 billion in the first half of 2026. That kind of income arrives quickly and can vanish just as fast. What happens to the rankings when deals dry up?
The rules behind the revenue
Size does not buy a bank any breathing room with regulators. The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision describes itself as the main global standard setter for bank rules. Its mandate is to "strengthen the regulation, supervision and practices of banks worldwide".
In the US, three agencies (the Fed, the OCC and the FDIC) put out a new Basel III Endgame capital proposal on March 19, 2026. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman had told senators the agencies wanted to act "before the end of March", according to Bloomberg Law. Reuters had earlier reported her push for "rightsizing" the capital rules for larger banks. Capital is what really caps a bank's growth, not customer demand. If the rules ease, is fast growth a strength or a warning?
Compliance is the other fixed cost. The Bank Secrecy Act grew out of a 1970 law on currency reporting. FinCEN says it makes banks keep records and report cash deals above $10,000 in a day. Banks must also flag suspicious activity. We think that burden favors the biggest players. They can spread the cost over millions of customers.
Local rules and responsible banking
Oversight is not only a Washington story. Connecticut's General Assembly Banking Committee handles matters tied to the state Department of Banking, savings banks, credit unions and lending. Its S.B. 218 became Public Act 26-79 this year. In Rhode Island, the Department of Business Regulation runs a Banking Division that covers banks, credit unions and bank holding companies.
On the voluntary side, the Principles for Responsible Banking launched in September 2019. UNEP FI says more than 350 banks, holding about half of the world's banking assets, are now working to apply them. Nature has its own version of banking too. The EPA defines a mitigation bank as a wetland or stream that has been restored or preserved to offset damage allowed elsewhere. Its value is counted in credits. Will the top finance companies in the world ever treat those credits as an asset class?
Risks, openings and what comes next
Governance is the biggest risk right now. HDFC Bank lost 27.4% of its market value after its chairman resigned in March and cited unspecified ethical concerns, GlobalData reports. The openings are just as clear. European lenders had a good quarter, and the rush to fund data centers and young AI companies keeps bringing fees to the biggest finance companies in the world.
We think the next fight will be over the quality of revenue. Steady fees, healthy margins and clean governance will matter more than another record headline. Business Honor examines that the biggest bank companies in the world by revenue are not just the largest. They are the ones whose income holds up under tighter rules and a slower deal market. The question for boardrooms is simple. Is size still the safest strategy, or has it become the costliest one?
