Isar Aerospace secures €200 million from ESA as Europe moves to strengthen independent launch capacity and reduce reliance on SpaceX.

German rocket startup Isar Aerospace has secured about 200 million euros ($233 million) from the European Space Agency (ESA) to boost Europe’s launch industry, strengthening the European space launch sector.

European governments are seeking to increase Europe’s launch capacity, reduce dependence on SpaceX, which dominates the global launch market, and secure independent access to space for civil, commercial and defence missions. The move highlights efforts to build independent launch capacity and reduce Europe’s reliance on non-European launch providers, while supporting future satellite missions and the development of new launch services.

The contract, signed under ESA’s European Launcher Challenge, will fund the development of future launch vehicles, expansion of testing and launch infrastructure and future missions. The investment is intended to support Isar’s future launch activities and help expand the infrastructure needed for upcoming missions.

It is the largest of three awards announced so far under the programme, which is backed by more than 900 million euros from member states. The funding reflects the broader effort by European countries to strengthen their launch capabilities and support the development of commercial launch providers.

Andreas Schwarz, a member of the SPD party and Germany’s parliamentary budget committee, said the contract highlighted the strategic importance of launch capacity as Berlin plans major spending on satellite programmes.

“Launch capacity is an elementary interest of a state,” Schwarz said, arguing that governments should consider measures ranging from long-term launch commitments to state shareholdings in launch providers like Isar to ensure satellites can be placed into orbit when needed.

Isar said it had already met initial programme milestones and that its launch manifest extended through 2028, including missions for ESA and other customers. The company’s planned missions reflect its expanding role in Europe’s launch sector as governments and space agencies seek greater access to orbital launch services.
