AI coding tools enable Anthropic to automate 90% of software development while expanding workforce and shifting employee focus toward strategic oversight responsibilities.

During his recent discussion with Patrick O'Shaughnessy on "Invest Like the Best," Krishna Rao, Chief Financial Officer at Anthropic, disclosed that AI coding tools now perform most coding tasks at his organization—significantly transforming how professionals work each day in office settings. In particular, the manner of work is evolving such that, increasingly, the execution layer of any knowledge-based job (i.e., software engineering and financial reporting) is handled by AI systems by AI writing code; while humans spend their time focusing on oversight, judgment, and making strategic decisions.
Can AI Increase Productivity without Cutting Jobs?
This trend is also applicable to Anthropic; Rao described how, currently, more than 90 percent of Anthropic's code base is created using Claude Code—an internal AI coding solution. The use of AI has not resulted in a reduction in employee headcount at Anthropic; in fact, according to Rao, they have added to their total workforce over time by utilizing AI as an accelerant to productivity in order to achieve greater assignments per person added to each team.
How Is AI Reshaping Finance and Reporting Functions?
The Anthropic finance division has become a classic example of how AI can influence how white-collar work is performed. They now rely on Claude to generate all of their financial statements and create any type of report that is relevant to them internally. Therefore, when a monthly review is conducted for the finance department, greater than 90% to 95% of the work required to prepare for the actual review has already been completed before any individual completes his/her first review.
Previously, it took staff hours to collect data for analysis and compilation, now, it takes just around 30 minutes. This change allows the financial teams to spend their time analyzing and interpreting information instead of gathering and formatting data.
Will AI Replace Jobs — or Create More Work?
This change is a fundamental change in how knowledge workers spend their time and use their knowledge and skills. Knowledge workers are now spending more of their time providing supervision of AI systems and making important decisions concerning the quality of the data produced by those systems, compared to the time they spent performing repetitive tasks. Rao describes this progression as being able to further enhance and accelerate the existing talent that is within the workforce. Thus enabling Anthropic to have what he describes as being the densest collection of AI research talent and inference engineering talent, in any single place in the world.
The increase in productivity due to this change will also have an impact on job creation. Some economists predict that jobs will be eliminated through automation much faster than new jobs can be created, while Rao believes that increased productivity through enhanced human labour will help spur job creation. He believes companies will continue to expand their work force because "there will always be too much work to do".
Business Honor is of the view that Anthropic's deployment of AI coding tools represents a strategic shift in how white-collar work is executed, with human employees transitioning from task completion to AI system oversight and strategic decision-making roles.
