LangDiscover published an analysis contrasting the language acquisition techniques of Babbel and gamification and how the latter can inhibit adult learners from attaining conversation proficiency. Many busy adults utilizing popular gamified apps employ several months to engage in activities but have still been unable to engage in basic conversations in the real world.
Many gamified platforms are designed with primary motivation based on user engagement (e.g., streaks and points). They can attract and maintain user participation by providing entertainment mechanisms, but in general, they do not effectively help develop the primary skills necessary to learn a language.
