Zootopia 2 has established a new record generating over $555 million within its debut weekend at box office.
Zootopia 2 is currently the 19th highest grossing entertainment of 2025. In assessing the top ten movies, one can identify a clear trend, starting with Ne Zha 2, which will likely earn around two billion in business, following with Lilo & Stitch (live-action) exceeding one billion USD, and third place will probably belong to Minecraft Movie, which will earn around 957 million USD. The other top five films include Jurassic Park: Rebirth, earning in the 868 million ranges, while the fifth place winner will likely be Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, with an earnings of about 662 million USD.
Of the top 5 movies listed above, two are animated and one is a re-imagining of an animated classic that has been made into a live action movie, another is mostly set in a CG animated world, and one features CG animated monsters. Animated films have been thought of as "for kids." Zootopia 2 not only reinforces Zootopia's success but also validates the desire for animated films in theatres.
Despite the increasing popularity of animated films that perform well at the box office, there is still a lack of cinema content aimed exclusively at children. This shows strong demand from children for high-quality entertainment through these animated movies. The recent success of K-Pop Demon Hunters on Netflix is a great example; it has been at the top of Netflix since it started in summer and was initially thought by Sony Pictures Animation to be unlikely to work in cinema. Regardless, K-Pop Demon Hunters was both a streaming success and a theatrical success with a sing-along version.
