Uganda’s Museveni seeks re-election among criticism and opposition from Bobi Wine.
The 80-year-old president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, has been officially announced as the ruling party's nominee for the January 2026 presidential election. Since his power as a guerrilla commander in 1986, Museveni has ruled for almost 40 years. Museveni has stated that he intends to remain in power and wants to make Uganda a "high middle income country." According to him, Uganda needs to prevent lagging behind, as Africa did in the past, while Europe and Asia advanced.
Museveni has ruled Uganda with a firm hand and little political freedom, according to opponents. He was able to hold office for such a long time because the constitution was amended twice to eliminate term and age restrictions. He has won every election since 1986, in spite of the odd. The famous singer who turned into a politician, Bobi Wine is expected to be Museveni's primary opposite party. The leader of the National Unity Platform party is Bobi Wine, whose true name is Robert Kyagulanyi. Claims that the government treats opposition members unfairly are only one of the many challenges he has faced in his opposition to Museveni. The 2021 election in the market, which was marred by accusations of vote tampering and government crackdowns on the opposition, saw Bobi Wine lose.
Since last November, Kizza Besigye, another opposition leader, has been detained. Despite being charged with treason, he disputes the accusations, claiming the government is attempting to silence him. Museveni stated that Uganda has made strides and needs to keep developing in his recent address to the National Resistance Movement party convention. Despite having fewer resources than Uganda, he wants the nation to make significant economic and social progress, similar to what certain Asian nations have accomplished. As the election draws near, the political climate is still heated, and many people are eager to see how Uganda's leadership will develop or remain the same.
