MTN’s long-term CSR strategy connects community growth with sustainable business development across Africa
MTN Group, Africa's largest telecommunication business, is moving beyond offering mobile and internet services to contributing more to society. For the company, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not solely about giving short-term benevolence donations. Instead, MTN considers CSR as a sustainable long-term involvement that is directly associated with business development and sustainability in Africa.
According to MTN it is not just connectivity. The business is increasingly targeting sectors like affordable technology, digital education, healthcare access, and environmental sustainability to drive actual development in Africa. In countries like Sub-Saharan Africa, where there are still millions of people without access to high-speed internet, MTN plans to make digital services and tools more affordable and accessible. MTN has one of its priorities as education. It funds digital literacy programs to equip youth with the skills that they will be required to have in the digital job market. It is also investing in health through the construction of clinics, maternity units, and mobile health units in rural areas.
MTN's environmental goals include becoming carbon-neutral by 2040. So far, it has deployed more than 3,000 solar-powered shops to reduce its carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency. MTN has thus far deployed more than 160 CSR activities in health and education that have reached over 4.5 million people on the continent. MTN collaborates closely with governments and NGOs to extend its reach.
MTN is convinced that by investing in communities, it can strengthen customer relationships and unlock new opportunities for business development. This strategy demonstrates how mobile operators can bring social benefit together with financial success, generating lasting change while remaining competitive within a dynamic industry.
