IonQ accelerates quantum networking efforts with a $1 billion investment to expand secure quantum communication and infrastructure.
American quantum computing company IonQ is speeding up its quantum networking plans after receiving a major $1 billion equity investment supported by Heights Capital Management, an affiliate of Susquehanna International Group. The funding is likely to help IonQ pursue its approach to commoditizing secure quantum communication and networked quantum systems. IonQ is now a central player in the new area of quantum networking — the use of quantum technology to develop ultra-secure, high-speed computer networks. As part of its growth, IonQ bought Qubitekk, a US quantum networking company, in early 2025. In May, it also acquired a controlling interest in Switzerland-based ID Quantique (IDQ), which is a leader in quantum-safe networking and sensing applications.
Its commercial EPB Quantum Network is already up and running and providing secure quantum-enabled data transmission to both public and private sector researchers. The network is one part of IonQ's larger mission to develop scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computing systems that can be networked together and deployed in real-world applications. The business also is involved in a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program to develop a fault-tolerant quantum computer, an indication of its being on board with national security and next-generation communication objectives.
IonQ CEO Niccolo de Masi emphasized that the capital raise places the firm's pro-forma cash balance at approximately $1.68 billion as of March 2025, and this is a solid foundation upon which to keep innovating. The firm has posted a net loss of $331.6 million in 2024, but quantum networking investments show an overall strategy of moving forward on the commercialization of quantum technology in the long term. As competition to build a quantum internet is escalating, IonQ is leading the way in combining computing and networking to enable a secure quantum future.
