Extreme temperatures lead to travel advisories, closures, and health risks across Europe.
Europe is currently experiencing a record heat wave, making it crucial for travelers with upcoming plans to stay updated on the situation. Reports suggest that a Mediterranean marine heatwave is merging with a heat dome over central Europe, resulting in perilously high temperatures in most popular tourist spots, especially in southern Europe.
Travel advisories have been issued by authorities in some countries, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Austria, following the heat wave. This has resulted in the closure of major cities and tourism destinations temporarily. The Eiffel Tower in Paris was shut down on July 1 and 2 under a red heatwave alert, while numerous locations in France experienced temperatures crossing 100°F (37°C) on June 30. The Portuguese city of Mora reached a sizzling 115.9°F (46°C), with temperatures of 114.8°F (46°C) reached in El Granado, Spain. June 2025 has already been recorded as the hottest June ever in Spain. Unfortunately, a tourist in Majorca died as a result of the record heat.
Sweden also released a warning, reminding people traveling to Spain of the severe heat wave. The warning emphasizes that the temperature in certain spots may rise above 40°C (104°F), and the heat is expected to last at least four days, which may be dangerous to health.
For those who wish to escape the stifling heat, there are a variety of choices. Most major European cities have shaded public parks, pools, and underground excursions. Parks have natural shade, and pools provide a cool respite. Paris and Rome also have underground catacombs, which are significantly cooler than the ground level. Finally, touring historic churches or cathedrals with heavy stone walls can serve as a relief from the heat. Traveling to Europe, it’s essential to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and take precautions to protect traveler’s health from the heat.
