Marriott International to grow with 50+ hotels and 9,000 rooms in Africa by 2027, luxury focused.
Marriott International has unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance its presence in Africa by opening over 50 new hotels and 9,000 rooms by 2027. The expansion is part of the company's long-term vision to tap into the region's thriving tourism and hospitality sector, driven by government investment, infrastructure expansion, and rising demand for varied holiday experiences. The growth of the group will extend across some of the African markets, including new projects in Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, and Mauritania. Moreover, Marriott will reinforce its presence in key markets like South Africa, Tanzania, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, and Nigeria. The company already has close to 150 hotels and 26,000 rooms across 20 countries in Africa.
A key part of the expansion will focus on luxury, premium, and select-service brands. Marriott’s Protea Hotels, Four Points by Sheraton, and branded residential projects are expected to see significant growth. Notably, more than 30% of the new additions will involve conversions and adaptive reuse projects, as Marriott seeks to tap into the region's dynamic and evolving hospitality landscape. In East Africa, Marriott is riding the rising tide of safari lodge and adventure travel demand. Entry of JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge in Kenya in 2023 is the first of a chain of safari-themed hotels. Six new safari lodges, such as The Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp and Mapito Safari Camp in Tanzania, are scheduled to open through 2027.
In West Africa, Nigeria remains the most important region of focus, and six new hotels have been opened, including Abuja's first Courtyard by Marriott hotels. The company is also poised to enter three new countries in West Africa, with major openings planned for Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, and Mauritania. With its vast expansion across different African parts, Marriott International is well placed to take over Africa's booming hospitality sector, offering visitors unique and upscale accommodations across the continent.
