High-performance, low-weight M40 motor redefines power-to-weight ratio in e-bike tech
Mahle has launched into the high-performance e-bike market with its all-new M40 motor, delivering real power in a compact package. With 850 watts of peak output and 105Nm of torque, the M40 is in company with DJI, Bosch, and Specialized motors — all beating some of them on vital specs.
The standout feature of the M40 is its impressive power-to-weight ratio. It tips the scales at 2.5kg but sends out 340 watts per kilo, just behind the DJI Avinox. Both of those are lighter than the Brose system from Specialized and the CX motor from Bosch. Coming from Mahle as their maiden mountain bike motor, it's obvious that they've tabled some intelligent engineering.
The M40 features sophisticated traction control, employing a sensor that checks wheel speed every 5 degrees — 84 times during each wheel rotation — to assist in gripping difficult ascents. It does this in much the same way as the DJI system found on bikes such as the Amflow PL Carbon, providing improved control on rough ground.
Battery capacity comes in a reduced 534Wh pack or an extended 800Wh version. The larger battery is projected to ascend 2,500 meters or travel 150km, although actual findings will differ. The lightweight option minimizes weight, which suits light trail or commuter e-bikes.
The wireless handlebar remote, slim 1.9-inch screen, and "Hill Brake" auto-hold for hill climbing are additional highlights. The motor is designed to fit a broad set of cranksets and does not need an external power meter due to internal torque sensing.
The Mahle M40 has not yet reached the UK, but its combination of power, weight, and technology makes it one of the most interesting new e-bike motors available.
