Tom Cruise opens Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in Cannes, under box office scrutiny.
Tom Cruise returned to the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2025, to walk the red carpet for the premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, his latest entry in the iconic action franchise. The occasion, marking a return to the festival after three years, saw a showstopping red-carpet moment as the orchestra played Lalo Schifrin's renowned theme music. Cruise's entrance, accompanied by co-stars such as Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames, was greeted with thunderous applause, marking the star power still connected with the actor.
The film, a continuation of the 2023 Dead Reckoning, follows Ethan Hunt in his quest for an AI antagonist known as The Entity. Set against globalized locations including the UK, South Africa, and Svalbard, The Final Reckoning raises the bar as Ethan Hunt is presented with his toughest assignment yet. The action scenes in the movie, including one heart-stopping biplane stunt and a hair-raising deep-sea diving stunt, again demonstrate Cruise's dedication to high-energy excitement.
Director Christopher McQuarrie credited Cruise's commitment to the craft for his role in defining the franchise's scope to be ambitious. The film's excessive length and exposition-packed opening act have also garnered mixed reviews, with some criticizing that a more streamlined approach would have been more compelling.
Though Cannes welcomed the film's bold action, The Final Reckoning has its work cut out at the box office. With a reported production budget of $400 million and the recent box office slump of the franchise, the movie will have to deliver well across the world to sanction its massive expense. Paramount, disappointed with Dead Reckoning, will be hoping that Final Reckoning replicates the box office success of Top Gun: Maverick.
