New Relic and GitHub Copilot launch AI integration to automate DevOps with human oversight.
New Relic this week released a preview of a powerful new integration between its AI observability agents and GitHub Copilot, with the goal of automating key aspects of the DevOps pipeline. Introduced at Microsoft Build 2025, the partnership allows AI agents not just to identify problems in production environments but also to trigger and confirm code fixes.
Says Nic Benders, New Relic Chief Technical Strategist, the company's AI agents can generate semi-structured, readable issue reports when anomalies are found. They can be caught by GitHub Copilot, which reads the issue, writes a code fix, and makes a human-reviewable pull request. After approval and merging, New Relic's platform automatically checks the change in real-time application environments.
This closed-loop process is a significant advancement for DevOps teams seeking to minimize manual drudgery and speed up incident resolution. "The idea from the beginning has been to automate as much as they can," added Benders. "AI agents are the newest tools enabling DevOps teams to do that.
Today, this capability is available as a preview to GitHub Copilot Pro+ and Enterprise customers. It demonstrates an industrywide shift towards embedding AI in software development and operations. A recent survey by Futurum Group discovered that 41% of IT professionals envision AI tools to be applied for code generation, testing, and review and 39% see more usage of machine learning models.
Benders stressed that although AI integration with DevOps is promising, it demands expertise and monitoring. DevOps engineers need to remain involved to retain quality and trust in automation.
As companies embark on this next iteration in DevOps, the concern is moving away from if to use AI to how much and where to best implement it.
