Automation trims routine HR roles, fueling IBM’s expansion in high-impact talent areas.
IBM’s internal adoption of artificial intelligence has redefined its approach to human resources—resulting in fewer traditional HR roles but enabling expanded hiring in strategic, revenue-generating domains. According to CEO Arvind Krishna, this shift has not only improved operational efficiency but increased overall employment at the company.
In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Krishna revealed that IBM replaced several hundred HR positions with AI tools capable of managing routine tasks such as CV screening, internal communications, and workforce analytics. These AI agents, he explained, allow the company to streamline administrative operations and reallocate resources to areas critical to IBM’s future.
“While we’ve automated certain enterprise workflows using AI, our total employment has gone up,” Krishna said. “It enables us to invest more in areas like software development, sales, and customer engagement—roles that rely on human insight and interaction.”
This transition underscores a broader industry trend where HR automation is no longer viewed solely as a cost-cutting measure. Instead, it’s emerging as a catalyst for redefining the role of HR—shifting from process-heavy tasks to a focus on strategic workforce planning, employee experience, and talent development.
