Google Cloud Expands India Infrastructure, Supports AI Mission

Google Cloud boosts India presence with sovereign cloud, AI integration, and public sector partnerships.

Google Cloud has unveiled a strategic initiative to grow its cloud infrastructure in India as it supports the government's IndiaAI Mission to enhance the nation's digital and artificial intelligence strengths. Google Cloud India's Vice President and Managing Director, Bikram Singh Bedi, emphasized the company's closer ties to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), particularly to meet the cloud needs of the public sector.

One significant step in this direction has been the launch of the Delhi cloud region by Bedi, which he called a "foundational step" to host the mission-critical workloads of government and public sector businesses. In order to expand its cloud capacity, Google Cloud is thinking of investing in Navi Mumbai in addition to its existing data center in Mumbai.

The technology giant is also concentrating on providing sovereign cloud solutions in collaboration with telecom companies such as Airtel to meet the special regulatory and compliance needs of Indian businesses and government agencies.

Bedi also shared that Google's Gemini 1.5 Flash AI model is already available in India, backed by the company's strong cloud infrastructure. With future releases likely to be rolled out locally through annual updates, the convergence of AI and cloud services will become even deeper.

India's digital economy is one of the fastest-growing in the world, said Bedi. "We are not just growing our infrastructure but also expanding cloud-based AI capabilities to enable the digital growth of the country”.

Edge computing is also taking a vital role in optimizing AI workloads by reducing latency and bandwidth requirements. With India's data centre investments expected to exceed $100 billion by 2027 (CBRE), Google Cloud is well-positioned as a leader in providing scalable, secure, and cost-efficient cloud solutions across industries.
