The FDA improves quality assurance by conducting systematic reviews of food chemicals to assure safety and transparency.
An important move has been declared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to improve the safety and quality of chemicals used in food. This new plan focuses on reviewing chemicals that are already on the market, especially those that consumers are most concerned about.
Speaking at the Food Safety Summit on May 15, Kyle Diamantas who is the acting deputy commissioner for human foods at the FDA has introduced the new post-market review program. This program will include a modern, science-based system to help the FDA decide which food chemicals to review first. A draft of this system will be shared with the public later this month for feedback.
In the months ahead, the FDA plans to take several important steps to support its new food chemical review initiative. These include launching a structured and science and technology based process for evaluating chemicals already in the food supply, gathering feedback from scientists, industry stakeholders, and the public, and publishing an updated list of chemicals that are presently being reviewed, including compounds like titanium dioxide and phthalates, as well as BHT, BHA, and ADA.
Until now, the FDA reviewed food chemicals only when concerns were raised by the public or new science came out. The goal of this new approach is to improve long-term food safety by being more proactive and consistent. FDA Commissioner Dr. Martin Makary said this effort will help rebuild trust by using top-quality science and greater transparency. Additionally, the agency intends to examine how food businesses designate substances as "generally recognized as safe" without FDA scrutiny and phase out petroleum-based coloring. This move marks a big improvement in how the FDA confirms the quality and safety of food chemicals, helping consumers make better choices and stay healthy.
