DOE names new leaders to secure energy systems and support AI-driven national goals.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced new leadership to help make the country’s energy system stronger, safer, and ready for the future. As energy use continues to grow, the U.S. must upgrade old systems and build new ones. These systems need to be secure and reliable to support America’s goals, especially in areas like artificial intelligence (AI).
To help with this mission, Alex Fitzsimmons has been named the new head of the Office of Cyber security, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER). He was previously the DOE Chief of Staff. Carl Coe will now take over that chief of staff role.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright compared the global competition for AI leadership to a modern-day Manhattan Project, emphasizing the need for reliable and secure energy systems to succeed. He highlighted Alex Fitzsimmons as a key leader from the start of the administration and expressed confidence in Fitzsimmons’ ability to lead CESER and safeguard the nation's energy infrastructure.
Alex Fitzsimmons helped lead the DOE transition during the first 100 days of the new administration. He has years of experience in energy policy and holds a master’s degree in cyber security from Georgia Tech. He also worked at DOE during the Trump Administration.
Carl Coe joined DOE in 2025 to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he helped improve processes and save costs. Before that, he worked for 17 years at PTC and later grew a company, Mango Practice Management, by over 700% as its CEO. These leadership changes show DOE’s strong focus on energy security, innovation, and preparing for the future.
