Innovative app aims to ensure safer metro travel for women across Hyderabad.
Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) is set to launch the Tutem mobile app, a cutting-edge technology designed to improve safety for women passengers using the metro system. Announced by HMR Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy on Thursday, the app—short for Technologies for Urban Transit to Enhance Mobility and Safe Accessibility—will soon be available for use by Hyderabad’s metro commuters.
The app has been developed with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and a collaboration between prestigious institutions such as BITS Pilani-Hyderabad, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, and HMR. It aims to provide a secure and comfortable journey for women, addressing the rising concerns around safety in public transport.
Designed with two key features—the Driver App and the User App—Tutem will allow women to travel with peace of mind, ensuring safe transitions from metro travel to other modes of transport, such as buses, two-wheelers, and even walking. The app’s safety features include a quick emergency alert system, enabling users to notify the police and their family members in case of distress.
Reddy highlighted that the initiative is in line with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s vision of enhancing public safety and addressing complex urban transport challenges. The app’s development is also seen as a step toward addressing broader socio-economic issues through innovative engineering and technological solutions. The launch is expected to make metro travel not just more efficient, but also safer for women, especially during late-night commutes.
HMR, which caters to nearly half a million passengers daily, continues to enhance its offerings with eco-friendly, convenient and now safer transport options for the city’s residents. The Tutem app is expected to revolutionize how women experience metro travel and could be extended to other cities in the future.
