Depp Regains Hollywood Lead Role in New Lionsgate Thriller

The thriller Day Drinker, the well-known American actor Johnny Depp's first big studio movie in years, marks a significant comeback to mainstream Hollywood. The first image from the upcoming thriller was made public on Monday by Lionsgate, a Canadian-American production firm. The association between Johnny and Penélope Cruz is their fourth. Their relationship reveals unexpected ties between them as they become entangled with Penelope's character, a crook.

This is Johnny's first famous release following a series of high-profile court battles with his former spouse, Amber Heard, during which he was accused of domestic abuse. A 2022 defamation action in the United States found in his favor, declaring Amber's accusations to be untrue, despite a 2018 UK libel verdict upholding claims against him.

In the U.S. trial, Johnny sued Amber for defamation after she wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Post in 2018 in which she called herself a "public figure representing domestic abuse." Depp said the piece hurt his reputation, but she did not name him. Due to Virginia's state limit, the jury's decision of $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive penalties was eventually lowered to $350,000 for Johnny.

Johnny concentrated on European projects such as the Italian film Modì and the French play Jeanne du Barry after the trial. After being axed from multiple series due to public outcry, Day Drinker marks his comeback to high-end film. The film's production has reportedly officially begun in Spain, and Webb has expressed excitement about the characters and plot of the movie.
