China green lights 10 nuclear reactors for increasing capacity and moving towards global energy leadership.
China's commitment to clean energy has been strengthened with the approval of the construction of ten new nuclear reactors by the State Council. This is the fourth consecutive year China has approved at least 10 reactors. With 30 reactors currently under construction, almost half of the global total, China is poised to surpass the US, becoming the world’s largest producer of nuclear energy by the end of the decade.
It is expected that the most recent reactors will cost about 200 billion yuan ($27 billion). China General Nuclear Power Corp. received approval for four reactors at its Fangchenggang and Taishan plants, while China National Nuclear Corp., State Power Investment Corp., and China Huaneng Group each won approval for two reactors.
China's nuclear capacity is expected to rise significantly from 60 gigawatts last year to 65 gigawatts by 2025. By 2040, the country’s nuclear energy output is expected to hit 200 gigawatts, representing about 10% of its total power generation. The state-owned system, which enables developers to obtain loans at advantageous interest rates, is a major benefit for China's nuclear expansion. These funding aids in controlling the large initial expenditures associated with nuclear developments.
Furthermore, the nation's steady stream of nuclear projects makes it possible to build skilled construction crews and developed supply chains, which lowers the possibility of expensive delays. In contrast, delays and cost overruns have befallen nuclear programs in the US and Europe. Shares of Chinese nuclear enterprises, such as CGN Power Co., witnessed increases as a result; after the announcement, its stock in Hong Kong increased 4.1%.
